Timed Intercourse
What is Timed Intercourse?
Timed Intercourse is a method of enhancing a woman's fertility through specific medications. With this fertility stimulation, the couple is encouraged to have sexual intercourse during the optimal time frame, which increases the chances of egg fertilization, leading to pregnancy. It is one of the oldest fertility procedures, and its success depends on factors such as the woman’s age, hormonal and health conditions, ovarian activity, and the cause of infertility.
How does Timed Intercourse work?
The procedure works by stimulating up to three ovarian follicles using oral or injectable medications, administered over a specific period. Medication use begins on the 2nd or 3rd day of menstruation. The dosage and type of medication are determined based on each woman's needs. After confirming stimulation, the woman receives a dose of HCG hormone, which triggers ovulation within 36 to 40 hours. The couple should have intercourse during this window to increase the chances of pregnancy, hence the term Timed Intercourse.
How long does the treatment last?
The treatment lasts around 15 days. Oral medications are taken for five consecutive days, while injectables may vary from 8 to 12 days.
Follicle growth is monitored every two days, starting 96 hours after initial treatment. This monitoring is conducted through ultrasounds and hormonal tests to determine the exact timing for the HCG injection.
After ovulation, a pregnancy test is performed after 15 days. The total treatment time, from the start to the confirmation of success, is approximately one month.
Who is this treatment for?
This treatment is mainly recommended for couples whose infertility is caused by anovulation (lack of ovulation). The male partner must have a normal semen analysis, and the woman must have healthy fallopian tubes and normal ovulation. Hormonal evaluations of the couple should also be normal. Success rates vary based on the woman's age. Up to three consecutive Timed Intercourse treatments can be attempted. If pregnancy does not occur after three attempts, a different treatment may be needed.
